Growing Courgettes Video

Growing CourgettesI must admit that the main problem I’ve come across with growing courgettes has been too many to eat through rather than the plant itself failing.

Because they are so productive, they really do need feeding well to give of their best.  I’ve tended to dig a hole  and fill with good quality compost before planting on top. In this video, gardening expert Sam Youd, head gardener at the famous Tatton Park Gardens, develops on this.

Courgettes, when young, don’t like having their feet wet. Too much water and they have a tendency to rot off. On the other hand, when they’re producing fruit they need quite a lot of water.

Sam has, of course, the answer to this problem of providing the right level of water at the right time.

I’ve just been to pick some and the plants are massive now! I’ve picked enough for tea and then some! I only looked at two of the five plants as well so I suspect there are loads more out there. However I’m off to see some friends tomorrow so will pick some and take them with me as gifts!

I’d tried using a plastic bottle in the past to allow me to water the roots but having seen the size of the drain pipes I think I should have tried a bigger bottle! I’ll save some larger bottles for next year and use them like the drainpipes in this video!

I really started growing vegetables last year but I am still to get a wonderful glut (I know they are annoying but it would be nice ) from my courgettes! Maybe this year? I also have a problem with greenfly and have tried to spray them with a mixture of water and soap but it only has a limited affect 🙁
