I’ve never been able to understand why many gardeners don’t grow shallots. They have so much going for them and are easier to grow than onions not to mention keeping better. One area people seem to go wrong is at the start, planting them – hence this video How To Plant Shallots
They like a fertile soil, being a somewhat hungry crop. They don’t like fresh manure or too much nitrogen though. An onion fertiliser is ideal.

The main points of the video are spacing correctly and avoiding damage when planting. Just pressing them into hard earth can damage the root plate.
